Abstract: This study examines implicit attitudes and stereotypes toward American Indians among 111 health care providers using the Implicit Association Test. The findings demonstrated negative implicit attitudes toward American Indians and implicit stereotyping of American Indians as noncompliant. The study also found that providers who reported previous cultural competency or implicit-bias training demonstrated lower levels of implicit stereotyping than providers without such training. Medical students also showed lower levels of implicit stereotyping compared with medical residents and practicing physicians. The findings highlight the potential role of implicit bias in health disparities affecting American Indian patients and the importance of further research into strategies for reducing provider bias.
