Abstract:

In 2002, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Indian Health Service and the Administration for Children and Families partnered with the Family Violence Prevention Fund on an initiative to improve the domestic violence response of tribal and urban health care facilities. The purpose of this initiative is to increase the role of health care providers in recognizing and responding to this issue. The study reported in this paper is a result of the implementation of this initiative at Feather River Tribal Health, Inc. The purpose of the study was to determine, prior to program implementation, how patient screening and case management were being addressed. The investigators wanted to document whether or not abused women were being referred for appropriate treatment and support.
