The Indian Health care Service (IHS) has a established a long and successful history of addressing acute, infectious diseases. Today, a new epidemiological challenge faces the Indian Health System: chronic illness. The IHS has recognized that the future health of American Indians and Alaskan Natives  communities depends on how effectively the Indian Health System addresses chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
