Abstract: The California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness (CASPEH) examines the characteristics, pathways into homelessness, experiences during homelessness, and barriers to exiting homelessness among adults experiencing homelessness in California. Conducted by the UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative, the study used nearly 3,200 questionnaires and 365 in-depth interviews across eight regions of California. The report examines housing costs and income, physical and behavioral health, health care access, substance use, violence, discrimination, and barriers to obtaining permanent housing. Native American or Indigenous participants represented 12% of the study population and were overrepresented relative to California's overall population. Findings are used to inform policy and program recommendations aimed at preventing homelessness, improving access to housing and health services, and addressing racial inequities.
