Abstract: The examination of disparate physical and mental health outcomes among Indigenous adolescents and young adults (AYAs) as compared to non-Indigenous AYAs illuminates the lasting impacts of settler-colonialism. Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated mental health disparities faced by Indigenous AYAs globally. This commentary will focus on American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) AYAs in the United States. It aims to provide historical context behind health inequity faced by AI/AN AYAs, discuss the exclusion of AI/AN AYAs from research, and present suggestions for providers caring for AI/AN AYAs to best advocate for their patients.
