Investing in Wellness: Financing Strategies for Behavioral Health in Indian Country

Authors: National Council of Urban Indian Health

Publication Year: October 1, 2024

Keywords: Culturally Informed Care, Health Care Access, Medicaid/Medicare, Mental and Behavioral Health, Substance Use, Suicide and Suicide Prevention, Traditional Healing

Abstract: The Investing in Wellness Toolkit addresses the urgent need for sustainable behavioral health funding in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities, where existing short-term grants fail to meet the often complex, ongoing challenges. Designed to support Tribal Nations, Tribal health organizations, and Urban Indian Organizations (UIOs), this toolkit offers practical strategies to enhance access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Key strategies include optimizing Medicaid reimbursement, integrating traditional healing as a sustainable approach, cultivating new funding opportunities, investing in prevention and crisis care, and expanding the behavioral health workforce.
