Abstract:
Many Native Americans are reluctant to go to health care providers who are unfamiliar with and insensitive to Native cultures because they often feel unable to describe their health needs to strangers outside their own culture. Frequently, mainstream providers misunderstand or misinterpret the reticence and stoicism of some Indians. Urban Indian programs not only enjoy the confidence of their clients, but also play a vital role in educating other health care providers in the community to the unique needs and cultural conditions of the urban Indian population.
