Short Abstract:
The National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) is a non-profit organization devoted to educate policymakers on health issues of some of the poorest and most underserved communities in the US: the Native Americans and Alaska Natives living in urban settings. Forced “relocation” policies in the 1950’s-60s moved a substantial portion of the Native population from Reservations to cities across the US.
NCUIH, as the umbrella organization for the 36 Urban Indian Health Programs in 47 sites across the U.S., advocates on behalf of the urban health programs providing services to Native Americans. Urban Indian health programs provide non-duplicative, culturally sensitive health services to Native American and Alaska Natives living across the United States. This network of urban Indian organizations provides health care that works in relation to health services provided by tribes and tribal organizations to provide a comprehensive support network of health care providers and services for Native American and Alaska Natives.
