This is a memorandum to all Urban Indian Health Programs from the Seattle Indian Health Board Urban Indian Health Institute.

Abstract:

By now, we all have had the chance to react to President Bushs proposal to eliminate funding for the urban Indian health program in the Indian Health Service FY-2007 budget plan submitted to the Congress on Monday, February 6. There has been a great deal of support already sent forth for continuing the urban Indian health funding from members of Congress, the National Indian Health Board, the National Congress of American Indians and others. At a hearing before the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday, February 8th, Congressman Jim McDermott from Seattle blasted DHHS Secretary Michael Leavitt on the plan asking how he justifies eliminating funds for a culturally-competent program without regard for its effects. The Senate Indian Affairs hearing on February 14 offered a similar assault on the Administration's plan. Administration officials are being questioned by many about the proposed elimination of the urban Indian health funding. We also appear to be getting support from a variety of different local, state, and national organizations including the National Association of Community Health Centers that refuted the President's claim.
