Short Abstract:

For the past three years running the Bush Administration has sought to eliminate the Urban Indian Health Program from the IHS budget. This is a small, but vital program in the larger health care system for Native American peoples. The National Council of Urban Indian Health has successfully advocated for the restoration of the UIHP in the FY2007 and FY2008 budgets passed by Congress. We are delighted to have found staunch friends in Congress on both sides of the aisle. We hope that once again Congress will reject the Administration’s attempt to zero out the UIHP.

The President’s FY2009 budget argues that American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN) living in urban centers can seek care from HRSA operated Community Health Centers (CHC) and any other local, state, and federal health resources; however, this position ignores the substantial barriers to care faced by AI/AN.
