Short Abstract:
The National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH) strongly opposes the Indian Health Services decision to close down the Fresno Native American Health Center, effective at the end of this week. The Fresno Native American Health Center wasat its opening in 2003one of the latest additions to the federally funded Urban Indian Health Program, which provides culturally relevant medical and behavioral health services to urban Indians across the nation. Today nearly seventy per cent of American Indians and Alaska Natives reside in urban areas, a fact which only emphasizes the need for competent and culturally knowledgeable medical services.
