Short Abstract:

I am contacting you regarding the Indian Health Service Scholarship Program, American Indians Into Psychology authorized by Section 217 of Public Law (P.L.) 94-437, as amended, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act. The American Indians Into Psychology program was established by Congress for the purpose of developing and maintaining American Indian psychology career recruitment programs as a means of encouraging Indians to enter the mental health field. This program is awarded to at least 3 Universities to administer. As a part of the program, the Universities select students to receive the IHS Graduate Scholarship, which provides financial support for graduate Psychology students, with a requirement for full-time clinical practice following their graduation. It has come to our attention that there are some problems with the administration of this program that is affecting Native Psychologists (scholarship recipients of this program) all across the country. I would like to ask you to find solutions to ensure that this very important program can continue and that Native scholarship recipients are supported and treated in a fair and equitable manner for the benefit of Indian Country.
